Water saving tips

Waterwise in the home

Saving water in your home is easier than you think.

  • Install a water-saving shower head to reduce the flow of water (3 stars or more)
  • Keep your shower time to 4 minutes or less
  • Make sure you have a full load before running your dishwasher
  • Scrape your plates instead of rinsing before dishwashing
  • Identify any leaks in your home*

*The easiest way to check is to take a reading of your water meter. Do not use any water for two hours, then take another reading. If the number of the meter has increased, you may have a leak.

Waterwise in the garden

Did you know, Fraser Coast residents use around half their water outside?

  • Water your garden in the early morning or evening, as less water is lost to evaporation.
  • Water less frequently and more deeply to encourage a deeper root system which provides greater drought protection.
  • Only mow when necessary. To prevent grass from drying out, keep it at least 3cm high. This will minimise evaporation from the soil underneath and ensure the roots are sheltered from the harsh sun.
  • Avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day.

Check your property for water leaks

It's a good idea to monitor your household's water meter to keep an eye on consumption and for the early detection of leaks.

Here’s how to check for leaks:

  • When you have finished using water for the night, make sure all taps are turned off (a dripping tap can lose up to 200 litres of water per day).
  • Take a meter reading. Write down the number, both black and red. Make sure you tell other occupants of the property that you are testing for water leaks and ask them not to use any water throughout the night.
  • Take another water meter reading first thing the next morning before any water is used. If the numbers have increased, you have a leak.
  • Notify your plumber as soon as possible.

Depending on the volume of water lost, Wide Bay Water may make some adjustment to your water bill.
