Urangan Pier protection works

Urangan Pier
What’s happening

Council is repairing the protection system under the Urangan Pier that helps stop the metal support piles from rusting.

Specialist marine contractors will:

  • Inspect the existing protection system under the pier.
  • Repair or replace damaged or missing parts.
  • Carry out any needed repairs to the piles and reconnect the system.
  • Test the system at the end to make sure it is working properly.

The “protection system” is a special electrical system called a cathodic protection system, that slows down rusting in metal that sits in seawater.

Why

Regular inspections have found parts of the existing protection system are damaged or not working properly.

If we don’t fix these issues, the piles could rust faster, leading to bigger, more expensive repairs in future. Doing this work now helps protect the structure and reduce the risk of major interruptions later on.

These works will extend the life of the pier and help keep it safe for everyone who walks, fishes and visits there.

When
  • Investigation works starting late January 2026 followed by repair works soon after.
  • The project is expected to be finished by July 2026, depending on weather, tides and what is found during inspections.
Who’s doing the work

The work will be carried out by SMC Marine Pty Ltd, who are experienced in marine infrastructure projects.

How much will it cost
  • Estimated cost: $980,000
  • Funding: Supported by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program, with additional funding from Council.
Community impact

The Urangan Pier will stay open to pedestrians during the works. Most of the activity will happen under the pier, so only minor impacts are expected.

Signs will be placed near the pier to let people know what is happening and to advise of any short-term changes.
