Free Fraser Coast fitness camps supported

20 November 2019

Free fitness sessions at Maryborough’s Anzac Park are set to continue for another year with Fraser Coast Regional Council and Genesis Care renewing support of a program helping hundreds of local residents improve their health and wellbeing.

Live Life Get Active is a not for profit charity organisation offering free outdoor activity camps and nutritional programs aimed at building fitter, healthier and happier communities right across Australia.

“The Live Life Get Active camp in Maryborough has achieved some amazing results in its first 12 months and Council is pleased to renew our sponsorship and support,” Cr Paul Truscott said.

“Nearly 350 people from in and around Maryborough have registered for the program so far, which offers free 45 minute fitness camps with active boxing, circuit training and yoga weekdays during school terms.

“Along with the fitness camps, Live Life Get Active also provides free tailored nutritional plans.

“With almost 80 per cent of registered members in Maryborough in the high risk categories for diabetes, the program offers them the support they need to have a healthy lifestyle.

“A key objective of the Fraser Coast Regional Council is to ensure we have a safe, healthy and active community and this initiative helps to achieve that goal.”

Trainer Melinda Macauley said she and her husband enjoyed running the free fitness camps at Anzac Park and welcomed the program’s renewal for another year.

“This is an intergenerational camp geared towards all ages and abilities with members from 18 to 80 training together and all the equipment is supplied,” she said.

“It’s been wonderful to see young mums losing weight as well as women in their 60s and 70s improving their mobility as a result of their participation in the fitness sessions.

“We look forward to continuing the camp into another year and encourage more local residents to take advantage of this free program that will help them get fit while having fun at the same time.”

Genesis Care Hervey Bay Centre Leader Daniel McNamara said: “GenesisCare is proud to support the Live Life Get Active initiative here on the Fraser Coast as it allows us to achieve our vision of treating patients as a whole and adopting a holistic approach to the treatment of cancer.”

“Regular exercise has been proven to help manage the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, help reverse the side effects of hormone therapy, reduce anxiety and boost mood, improve strength and reserve bone mass.”

Live Life Get Active fitness classes are also available in Hervey Bay with the program there not due for renewal until April 2020.
