Maryborough Cemetery

Walker Street, Maryborough  (Columbarium, Garden of Rest, and Children's Memorial Garden)

As one of the Fraser Coast’s most historic cemeteries, Maryborough Cemetery offers a peaceful and dignified setting for remembrance. Established in 1873, its monumental section is state heritage-listed and also appears on the local heritage register, bearing testimony to the region’s rich history. Within this section stands the rare and beautifully preserved mortuary chapel, built in 1883 - a fine example of late 19th-century timber architecture.

Across the road lies the Garden of Rest, opened in 1960. This thoughtfully landscaped area includes columbarium walls, garden niches, official war graves, and the tenderly designed Children’s Memorial Garden. Surrounded by mature trees and quiet paths, Maryborough Cemetery is a place of lasting tribute, reflection, and deep connection across generations.

Maryborough Garden of Rest – Lawn Cemetery

Maryborough Garden of Rest offers several peaceful options for both burials and the interment of ashes.

Burial Options

Lawn Graves

Graves are arranged in rows with a plaque installed at the head, typically set on a concrete base and installed level with the ground. Plaques are usually made of granite, marble, or bronze. Families may choose to organise a plaque privately or with Council assistance. Conditions apply for installation approval.

Lawn Beams

Similar to lawn graves but feature a headstone made of granite, marble or bronze, placed on a prefabricated beam. A sloped desk-style plinth is permitted; however, conditions apply. Families usually engage a private stonemason for supply and installation.

Ashes Interment Options

An ashes interment is the placement of cremated remains in a smaller memorial space - such as a wall niche, garden setting, or memorial rock - rather than a full burial plot. It’s a meaningful and lasting way to honour a loved one’s memory.

Reserving a niche in advance can ease the burden on your family during what is often a difficult and emotional time.

Maryborough Garden of Rest offers several peaceful and respectful options for ashes interments, including columbarium walls, garden niches, memorial poles, and our unique Pond of Reflection.

Columbarium Walls
  • Cedar & Oak Walls: Traditional brick walls with single interment niches. The Oak Wall also includes seven larger niches for side-by-side double interments.

  • Olive, Palm, Poplar & Willow Walls: Modern granite walls, each offering single interment niches only.

  • All plaques are standard size and can be personalised. Optional vases are available.

  • A shelter and seating area are provided nearby.

Memorial Poles

If you choose to keep or scatter ashes elsewhere, a plaque can be placed on a Memorial Pole beside the Pond of Reflection. The fee includes a standard plaque.

Children’s Memorial Garden

A peaceful, hedged garden overlooking a fountain and angel sculpture, dedicated to children aged 16 and under. Niches include a granite block and standard plaque. Granite options include pink, off-white, black, grey or blue.

Columbarium Gardens

These landscaped gardens surround the columbarium walls. Niches are marked with sandstone-coloured blocks and accommodate single or double interments. Standard plaques are included; vases are not available. Seating and a shelter are provided for quiet reflection.

Pond of Reflection

A landscaped garden featuring interment rocks placed around a central pond. Rocks allow for:

  • Single, double, triple or quadruple interments (depending on rock size)

  • Built-in vases and standard-sized plaques

  • Each rock includes a base plaque and the first detachable plaque. Future interments include a new detachable plaque.

Ashes may also be scattered over the pond from the viewing deck. Please refer to Council’s Schedule of Fees for costs.

Maryborough Monumental Cemetery

The Monumental section of the Maryborough Cemetery is State Heritage-listed and on the Local Heritage Register. The Monumental section was established in 1873. The Mortuary Chapel, located in the Monumental Section was erected in 1883 and is a rare example of a late 19th-century timber chapel.

Burial Options

Monumental Graves

These plots allow for the construction of a custom monument that spans the entire grave. A stonemason designs and installs the memorial in consultation with the family. Monumental graves provide space for more elaborate structures and inscriptions.

Burial Vaults

Vaults are precast concrete-lined graves with a concrete base, walls, and lid. The vault is sealed after burial and may be finished with a monument. These are often chosen for cultural, religious, or personal reasons. Check with Council for vault availability.
