Description

River Heads Reserve is an ongoing community project involving local volunteers and the Fraser Coast Regional Council. The Reserve itself is mostly an oval, with extravagant paths and even manicured gardens at the front and boasts a creek and conservation area to the rear.

A total of 60 bird species were identified on the land with the most significant species being the shorebird species which are protected under international agreement. Migratory shorebirds breed in the northern hemisphere but spend the summer months feeding on mudflat estuarine areas in Australia. A critical high tide roosting area is mapped within the eastern half of the reserve. The buffer required for protection of the wader birds from disturbance is 200 metres wide and extends to cover about half of the reserve including all of the conservation area.

River Heads Reserve is located at Seafarer Drive, River Heads.
