Fraser Coast Regional Council will sign up to a special charter to support small businesses to be prosperous and sustainable.

At its meeting today (Wednesday 28 April), Council resolved to sign up to the Small Business Friendly Council Charter initiative being led by the Office of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner.

The initiative has been established to recognise and support Queensland councils that are actively assisting small businesses in their area and helping small business to recover and build resilience following disasters and economic challenges.

Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said small businesses were at the heart of the Queensland economy and regional communities like those on the Fraser Coast.

“Our Council is committed to working with small businesses to grow the local economy, keep people employed and create new jobs,” he said.

“We recently announced a $500,000 COVID-19 Economic Stimulus package with a wide range of programs designed to help businesses improve shopfronts, increase sales, reduce costs and share knowledge.

“Council also extended regulated business licences and permits for six months for free at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, introduced the Buy Local Fraser Coast Gift Card initiative and worked with the Queensland Government to secure direct Jetstar flights to and from Sydney.

“In addition, Australian television presenter and respected finance expert David Koch will headline a special business summit being organised by Council at the Beach House in Scarness on 14 May.”

Cr Jade Wellings said:

“Signing this charter is a proactive demonstration of our Council’s commitment to be mindful of small businesses, their issues and priorities when making decisions for our local community.

“It also opens the door to Council receiving more support and assistance from the Queensland Small Business Commissioner and will strengthen our relationship with local chambers of commerce and the small business community.”
