New Nikenbah roundabout completed

Fraser Coast motorists travelling through one of Hervey Bay’s busiest intersections will now have a safer and smoother journey following the completion of a new roundabout at Nikenbah.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said the $3.4 million project at the intersection of Main Street, Chapel Road and Maggs Hill Road was the final part of a staged development of Main Street from the Esplanade to Booral Road.

“It is a fantastic piece of infrastructure that improves traffic flow and safety on one of our busiest intersections,” Cr Chapman said.

“Main Street has always been one of the main access points to Hervey Bay and a north-south artery.

“It now services the growing southern suburbs taking even more traffic into the city and we expect traffic volumes on Main Street to continue to increase.

“More vehicles are also using Maggs Hill Road as the suburbs around the Fraser Coast Anglican College continue to grow and the intersection is the main access to the Nikenbah Transfer Station and recycling centre.

“The intersection was the final piece of the jigsaw to slot into place in the program to upgrade Main Street, and we thank the Queensland Government for providing $1.6 million towards the project under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).

“The recent wet weather has delayed the finalisation of the project but it’s great to see it is now essentially finished, aside from some minor landscaping that will occur over the next few weeks.

“We thank everyone for their patience while the road works have been underway over the past six months.”

Future works include upgrades to the intersection at Chapel Road, Madsen and Woods roads, which is proposed for the 2021/22 financial year.

“As the number of people accessing the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct continues to increase, this intersection will also need an upgrade,” Cr Chapman said.
