Fraser Coast Regional Council has adopted a new strategy to drive its commitment to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.

Cr Paul Truscott said the Greening the Fraser Coast Strategy had been developed as a guiding document to inform the roll-out of Council tree planting programs, including two pilot projects in Adelaide Street in the Maryborough CBD and in a Hervey Bay residential estate.

“Council is committed to maintaining and enhancing the unique natural environment and lifestyle we all enjoy here on the Fraser Coast,” he said.

“The Greening the Fraser Coast Strategy aims to provide comfortable places and spaces through a range of tree planting projects across the region as part of an overall commitment to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.

“It’s about providing healthy communities, cooler suburbs and better liveability.

“The strategy includes information about street tree planting methods, proposed street tree species and soils as well as guidance on the delivery of two pilot planting projects in the Maryborough CBD and the Highview Estate in Urraween.”

As part of the Adelaide Street Revitalisation project in the Maryborough CBD, a stratavault system is being used for the first time on the Fraser Coast for the street tree installation.

This provides the tree stock with an improved environment for growing, is used as a root barrier and is also used as a stormwater capture and filtration system.

In addition to the pilot projects, Council has also been undertaking other tree planting projects with a recent example being work in Grosvenor Street in Maryborough where Council collaborated with residents to plant a number of street trees.

The endorsement of the Greening the Fraser Coast Strategy at this week’s Council meeting follows community consultation on the draft strategy earlier this year, with overwhelming positive feedback received.

Further planning work is being done to identify opportunities for tree planting on Council-managed land and mechanisms to assess the suitability of tree planting locations.
