Dozens of artists will vie for a range of prizes at the Hervey Bay Art Society’s 37th Annual Competitive Art Exhibition.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the winners would be revealed as part of the exhibition opening on Saturday 3 July, with the artwork to be on display in all four galleries at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough until 15 August 2021.

“This is a highly anticipated annual competitive exhibition by the Hervey Bay Art Society that attracts entries from across Australia,” he said.

“Since its debut in 1983, the exhibition has only grown in strength, with some 150 works displayed at previous events – with artists this year vying for a healthy prize pool of $6,300.

“With seven award categories in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, this exhibition will be an incredible opportunity for residents to enjoy a variety of talent in one place.”

Cr Seymour said the Fraser Coast had a strong tradition of performing arts, visual arts, heritage and cultural experiences.

“We all engage in culture and arts in some shape or form, and the arts and culture are at the heart of our personal and regional identity,” he said.

“This year the Hervey Bay Art Society is celebrating 50 years together, making them one of the longest running cultural organisations in the region.

“This exhibition is one not to be missed and I encourage residents and visitors to take the opportunity to check it out while it is on display over the next six weeks.”

Gatakers Artspace is at 311 Kent St, Maryborough and is open weekdays 9.30am to 3.30pm and weekends 9.30am to 2pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Fraser Coast Regional Council is also currently asking local residents to help shape a new Fraser Coast Arts and Culture Strategy.
