Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ coming to the Brolga Theatre

Fraser Coast residents will have the opportunity to watch an award-winning live theatre performance of George Orwell’s Animal Farm at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough later this month.

Mayor George Seymour said the Shake and Stir Theatre Company production had toured across Australia in recent years to great critical acclaim.

“George Orwell’s intense tale Animal Farm tells the story of a revolution that has taken place on a farm with the pigs assuming control and promising a better life free from human service. It illustrates how greed and power can corrupt with devastating consequences,” he said.

“Over 40 animals are portrayed between the performers, with each actor morphing physically and vocally in front of the audience as they bring the farmyard inhabitants to life.”

Adaptor Nick Skubij said his team was thrilled to be able to bring the production to the Fraser Coast.

Animal Farm has stood by me since I first read it and it still holds great relevance to audiences in 2021. It’s quite possible the happenings as described on Animal Farm could unfold on the evening news on any given night,” he said.

“The novel’s ability to clearly, concisely and deeply affect the reader, whilst presenting on the surface as a simple, almost childish parable is astounding and now more than ever, its message should be heard.

“The timing of this tour comes hot on the heels of a once in a generation health pandemic and at a time when the entire human population has undergone something of a pause and a reset.

“I hope this production continues to encourage audiences to question the way we live, our ideals, our aspirations and provokes spirited conversation in the theatre foyers. Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2021.”

Animal Farm is on at 7.30pm on Saturday 23 October 2021 at the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre in Maryborough. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for Friends of the Brolga, $37 for pensioners/seniors and $20 for students/children. Suitable for ages 12 and up.

Cr Seymour encouraged Fraser Coast residents to sign up for the Brolga’s email newsletters to be the first to know about upcoming shows and to access exclusive offers and pre-sale periods.

“You can register for the eNewsletters on the Brolga Theatre’s website – brolgatheatre.org – and you can become a Friend of the Brolga for a low membership fee which entitles you to discounted tickets to most performances,” he said.

Tickets, gift vouchers and Friends of the Brolga memberships can be purchased online at brolgatheare.org, by phoning 4122 6060 or in person at the Box office between 8.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
