Christmas lights trail

In Kingfisher Drive, Maryborough, she’s known as the Instigator – the driving force behind the street taking the Fraser Coast Christmas Street Award last year.

With just under 10 weeks to Christmas, Maree Coslovi is already marshalling her forces and dusting off the Christmas lights to put together the display for this year.

“I think I have at least 50 sets of lights and five blow-up yard decorations,” she said.

The job of installing the lights and decorations is spread over most of November.

The job now is to marshal the other residents of the street – which may not be all that hard. Last year every house in the street participated to some degree.

“I know some neighbours are looking forward to this year and have started checking their lights and decorations,” Maree said.

Last year thousands of people visited the street on the outskirts of Maryborough.

“We lost count of the cars. There was easily a couple of hundred cars every night from December 1 until Christmas week, then the street was so full of cars and people you could hardly move.”

Fraser Coast residents planning to light up their homes for Christmas are encouraged to let Council know so their display can be part of the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail.

“More than 100 families put their Christmas light displays on the map in 2020 so people could drive past and enjoy the display,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour he said.

“So, if you are decorating, we’d love to hear from you.”

To be a part of the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail, fill in the online nomination form that will be available on the Council website www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/festive from October 18.

Residents can also visit Council Customer Service centres or ring Council on 1300 79 49 29 to ask a Customer Service Officer to help them fill in the online form.

Council will create a map of the lights displays, which will be available on its website from early December.

Residents can also get together to have a go at taking out the coveted Christmas Street Award.

You need a minimum of three houses to nominate for the street award.

The winning street is presented with the ‘Christmas Street’ sign to be displayed under their street sign for the next year.

Council will join in the festive fun and decorate giant Christmas trees in front of the Maryborough City Hall and beside the stage at the Seafront Oval on the Hervey Bay Esplanade.

Nominations for the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail, and for Christmas Street, close at 5pm on Monday, November 22 to give Council time to create the maps so they are available from early December.

The maps, and a list of festive activities from across the region, will be available from the Council website in early December.
