Students can win share of almost $2000 in prizes in literary contest

Fraser Coast school children are invited to enter the Mary Poppins Literary Competition to win a share of almost $2,000 in prizes.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the long-running contest, presented by The Proud Marys Association with the support of Fraser Coast Libraries, allowed young creative writers and poets to show their talent.

“The annual competition commemorates author P.L. Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins, who was born in Maryborough,” he said.

“It’s important to foster the creativity of young people and we’re really happy to be lending our support to encourage young people to write a story or poem for the contest.”

The Proud Marys Association Inc president Jacqui Elson-Green said this year’s competition was the 22nd and it was believed to be the most valuable literary contest for school children in the country.

“Inspiring the next generation of writers and poets through this competition is a great way to honour P.L. Travers,” she said.

“Our theme this year is ‘Everything is possible, even the impossible’ and should provide opportunities for our young authors to be very creative in their storytelling.

“Students have until August 26 to get their entries in.”
