Adoption Centre surrender

Call ahead to make the make surrendering animals as seamless as possible.

That’s the request being made from Fraser Coast Regional Council following an increase in the number of animals being surrendered by people who are moving or who are having trouble finding rental accommodation.

“Council is working hard to re-home as many pets as possible as quickly as possible with community support and the support of refuges, foster groups and foster carers both in and out of the region,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more animals being surrendered, and recently we had 17 cats and kittens that were abandoned on a farm handed in.

“With the high numbers of animals currently coming into our care, we’re asking anyone who is going to surrender a pet or hand in abandoned animals, to please call the centres first to make an appointment.

“Surrendering a loved pet is stressful. Having staff on hand to help and can lessen the stress for animals and owners.  Calling first and making an appointment to hand in the animals helps make the whole process smoother, which is good for the animals, good for the owners and good for Council staff.”

The Pounds and Adoption Centre can be contacted on 1300 79 49 29 or 4197 4631.

“We’re always looking for new rescue groups to come on board and assist the animals as they find their forever homes,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“In the past six months, we have been very successful in finding homes for 90 animals through the adoption centre while 105 have been taken by rescue groups.”

Cr O’Keefe urged people who are thinking about becoming a foster carer to contact a rescue group.

“Rescue groups are always looking for new carers to come on board and assist the animals as they find their forever homes,” Cr O’Keefe said.

Community members who have a passion for animals and are interested in working with Rescue Groups can contact the new Animal Facilities and Education Co-ordinator at the Animal Management Centre, Tiffany Palmer, on 1300 79 49 29.
