Road renaming clears the way for consistency and safety
The road formerly known as Urraween Extension Road will be officially renamed Boundary Road, ensuring consistency in road naming and improved accuracy for emergency services and navigation systems.
At its meeting today (Wednesday 28 May 2025), Fraser Coast Regional Council endorsed the change to bring the older section of the road — between Main Street and Kawungan Way — into line with the newer stretch between Kawungan Way and Denmans Camp Road.
The newer section, completed in 2024, is already named Boundary Road.
Roads and Transport spokesperson Cr Denis Chapman said the renaming was an important step to eliminate confusion caused by mismatched road names and mapping anomalies.
“Renaming Urraween Extension Road to Boundary Road creates a single, continuous name for this major east-west route through Hervey Bay,” Cr Chapman said.
“This new road connection has made a huge difference for local traffic by easing congestion on Boat Harbour Drive and giving drivers a faster, more direct route between the airport, hospital and growing residential areas.”
While the Boundary Road extension was completed last year, the older stretch retained its original ‘Urraween Extension Road’ name, which created inconsistencies between Council records, GPS navigation systems and emergency service databases.
“This change isn’t just about signage — it’s about safety and planning,” Cr Chapman said.
“Having one continuous road name helps everyone from first responders to property developers and everyday motorists.”
Council will now update street signage, amend official records and notify relevant stakeholders. The change will also support future land development and streamline addressing for properties along the road corridor.
