Burrum River Bridge to close temporarily for repairs
A century-old Fraser Coast bridge connecting Howard and Torbanlea will be closed for five weeks while essential structural repairs are carried out.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Byrne said the Burrum River Bridge would be closed from 16 June to 21 July 2025, weather permitting, to allow for a $305,000 repair works to be delivered by RoadTek.
“The works will include replacing deck rail posts, repairing the bridge surface, and addressing cracks in the piers and other bridge components,” she said.
“These works are vital to ensure the bridge remains serviceable for the community.
“We recognise this closure will cause inconvenience, particularly for residents in the Howard and Torbanlea areas, and we encourage everyone to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel during this period.”
Cr Byrne said the Burrum River Bridge, which is about 100 years old, was transferred to Council from the State Government when the new Bruce Highway was built in the mid to late 1980s.
“Council has monitored the bridge’s condition since the handover and recently engaged professional engineers to conduct a detailed structural assessment,” she said.
To minimise disruption during the upcoming repairs, the bridge will remain open to both traffic and pedestrians:
- Weekdays: Overnight from 5:30pm to 6:30am
- Weekends: All day Saturday and Sunday
The bridge will be closed on weekdays from 6:30am to 5:30pm, with traffic detoured via the Bruce Highway.
Variable message signs (VMS) will be activated this week to alert road users ahead of time.
“Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as these important works are carried out,” Cr Byrne said.
