Have your say on the future of cemetery services
Fraser Coast residents are being invited to help shape the future of burial and memorial services across the region.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council was planning ahead to ensure services continue to meet the needs of a growing and changing community.
“We’re starting a conversation with our community to understand what matters most when it comes to burial and memorial options,” Cr Seymour said.
“Many people have strong personal, cultural or spiritual beliefs about how we remember loved ones, and we want to make sure those values are respected as we plan for the future.”
Council is considering a range of options, including expanding existing sites, working with private providers, or developing a new cemetery in Hervey Bay at an estimated cost of around $8 million or more. While there is still space available at Hervey Bay’s Polson Cemetery, the site cannot be expanded further due to its location. Maryborough Cemetery has significant long-term capacity, with enough land available for burials for hundreds of years at current rates.
Council is also seeking feedback on other choices, such as cremation, natural burials and alternative memorial options.
“These are deeply personal decisions,” Cr Seymour said. “That’s why it’s so important that we hear from people across the Fraser Coast, so we can make fair and respectful plans that reflect the needs of current and future generations. “Community feedback will help guide future decisions and ensure services are accessible, affordable and suited to the people who live here.”
The community engagement runs from 23 June to 21 July 2025. Residents will be able to share their views through face-to-face drop-in sessions and an online survey, with printed surveys also available at local libraries and Customer Service Centres.
