Fraser Coast Ability Awards - Nominations Now Open!

Nominations are now open for the 2025 Fraser Coast Ability Awards, which celebrate the outstanding achievements of people with disability, and the individuals and organisations championing inclusion across the region.

Fraser Coast Inclusive Access Advisory Committee Chair Cr John Weiland said the annual event had become a cornerstone of Council’s commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive community.

“This year marks the 27th Fraser Coast Ability Awards and we’re proud to honour the people and stories that inspire positive change every day,” Cr Weiland said.

“Whether it’s through innovation, advocacy, arts, sport, or leadership - these awards shine a spotlight on those who lead by example and help create a community where everyone belongs.”

The 2025 awards will be held on Friday 19 September in the Brolga Theatre Foyer, with this year’s theme ‘Sparkle – shine bright in your community’ encouraging attendees to dress with flair while celebrating diversity and inclusion.

Cr Weiland said a refreshed awards structure and updated categories had been introduced following feedback from the Inclusive Access Advisory Committee.

“We’ve placed a stronger focus on recognising individual achievement while still celebrating inclusive initiatives from across the Fraser Coast,” he said.

“This ensures the awards stay relevant and reflect the values of our vibrant and evolving community.”

Categories include:

  • Hall of Fame
  • Excellence in Innovation
  • Outstanding Inclusive Initiative
  • Changemaking through Leadership and Advocacy
  • Outstanding Personal Achievement in Sports and Recreation
  • Outstanding Personal Achievement in Arts and Culture
  • Significant Personal Success and Leading by Example (Ted Weber Award)

The event will also feature performances by the Maryborough Special School’s Auslan Signing Choir, Sparks All Ability Dance Group, and a combined dance performance by the Hervey Bay Special School and Torquay State School. Auslan interpretation will be provided throughout the event, with a disco celebration to close the day.

Nominations are open until 29 August and can be submitted online via SmartyGrants at https://www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/fraser-coast-ability-awards
