Council to explore options for Maryborough Airport

Fraser Coast Regional Council will prepare a report on options for the Maryborough Airport site before deciding on whether to spend $21.5 million on a major rebuild of the runway and other critical infrastructure.

Economic Development spokesperson Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said the report would examine a range of options – including the continued operation of the site as an airport - to maximise economic and community benefits for Maryborough and the wider Fraser Coast region.

“This is about responsibility and future opportunity,” he said.

“No final decision has been made. Council will look at all options first, and then decide whether investing $21.5 million in an airport rebuild is the right path for Maryborough.

“This is not a case of fixing a few potholes or doing a quick reseal.

“We’ve been carrying out routine maintenance on the pavement surface as required, but to meet modern safety standards, the base under the runway needs rebuilding.

“Taking a fresh look at the site, so that we can deliver the greatest value for the residents of Maryborough and the Fraser Coast, is the prudent thing to do.”

The Maryborough Airport remains open for small aircraft, and safety measures are in place. In heavy rain, when water builds up on the runway, landings may be temporarily stopped for safety.

“How the Maryborough Airport is operating now is not a long-term solution. That’s why Council will assess all options before deciding the best way forward,” Cr Cosgrove said.
