Plan adopted for Maryborough Library and City Hall offices
Fraser Coast Regional Council has adopted a plan to bring its Maryborough administration and customer service teams together in City Hall, while committing to a major upgrade of the Maryborough Library and exploring improved parking options for library visitors.
Council will also consider potentially accommodating staff in nearby historical buildings.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the decision provided certainty for residents and staff while keeping Council services in the heart of Maryborough.
“This has been a complex process over several years, with many options explored and weighed against costs, risks and community outcomes,” Cr Seymour said.
“This plan respects Maryborough’s heritage by breathing new life into City Hall and potentially other nearby historic buildings.
“By adapting these sites for modern community use, we are showing how the past and present can work together to create a vibrant future.”
Cr Daniel Sanderson said bringing staff back under one roof would save money and help boost the city centre.
“Staff have been split across leased offices for more than six years, which has had both financial and operational impacts,” he said.
“I’m pleased we’ve reached a clear outcome that benefits both our staff and the wider community, ensuring Council continues to have a strong presence in the heart of Maryborough while creating a vibrant precinct that honours our heritage.
“Relocating teams into City Hall and potentially nearby heritage sites will also improve service delivery and inject activity into the CBD, which is a win for local businesses.”
Cr Paul Truscott said the library will undergo a significant refurbishment to meet modern standards and secure its future as a vibrant hub for the growing community.
“Maryborough Library is a much-loved facility, but it is due for major renewal,” he said.
“The upgrade will allow us to modernise the library, expand programs and events, and ensure it continues to be a welcoming place where people of all ages can learn, connect and be inspired.”
Detailed design work for the City Hall refurbishment is scheduled to begin in 2025/26, with construction planned for 2026/27, subject to budget approval.
Design for the library upgrade is expected in 2028/29, with construction between 2029 and 2031, subject to budget approval. Council will also pursue grant funding opportunities to help deliver the project.
