Council tips in more for new basketball stadium
Fraser Coast Regional Council has approved an additional $700,000 to help the Hervey Bay Basketball Association complete its new two-court facility at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct.
Mayor George Seymour said the investment recognised the enormous community effort that had gone into bringing the project to life.
“Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia, and this new stadium will be a slam dunk for the Fraser Coast,” he said.
“The Hervey Bay Basketball Association has done an outstanding job leveraging Council’s original $2.8 million contribution by securing more than $700,000 in private funding, sponsorships and in-kind support from local businesses and community partners.
“Major backers like Bendigo Bank, the Hervey Bay RSL and Engineers Plus, along with dozens of local businesses and volunteers, have helped drive this project and shown the strength of community support behind it.
“This extra funding from Council is the assist needed to finish the project to the standard our community deserves – with proper flooring, seating, toilets and other essentials in place from day one.”
Sport and Recreation spokesperson Cr John Weiland said the stadium would not only provide a home court advantage for basketball but also cater to other indoor sports, school competitions, and community events.
“This project will be a game changer for local sport and recreation,” Cr Weiland said.
“Once complete, it will provide opportunities for young people to be active, for families to come together, and for the region to host bigger tournaments and events. It’s exactly the type of facility that will keep our community connected and growing.”
The additional $700,000 will go towards:
- Mezzanine level with stairs and flooring
- Epoxy sports flooring
- Basic tiered stadium seating
- Public toilet facilities
- Basic landscaping
- Basic audiovisual setup
With the extra funding now secured, the Hervey Bay Basketball Association anticipates the facility will be finished and fully operational in early 2026.
