Statement on Maryborough CBD concerns
Council understands and shares the community’s concerns and frustrations about anti-social behaviour in the Maryborough CBD. We regularly speak with business owners in the CBD and listen to their feedback.
It’s important to note that Council’s powers in this area are limited. Council staff do not have the authority to move people on or deal with criminal behaviour - that’s the role of the Queensland Police.
We continue to work closely with Queensland Police and State agencies, providing CCTV footage when requested. Council has also called for more support around housing, mental health and addiction services - the real drivers behind much of the behaviour being seen.
We’ve also written to the State Government asking for stronger rules around the use of hotels as low-cost accommodation.
Several Councillors attended the previous community meeting, and it will be a matter for individual Councillors if they choose to attend the upcoming one.
Council staff may attend as observers, as has occurred before, to listen to concerns and stay informed.
Council is committed to doing its part and advocating for long-term State-led solutions that improve safety and wellbeing in the Maryborough CBD for everyone who lives, works, visits or runs a business there.
