City Hall to bask in new streetscape

9 January 2020

Downtown Maryborough will be buzzing at night as the next stage of the CBD Revitalisation Project kicks into action on Sunday (January 12).

Cr Daniel Sanderson said the $2.5 million makeover would involve road and footpath upgrades on both sides of Kent Street between Adelaide and Lennox streets in front of the Maryborough City Hall.

The project includes the replacement of kerb and channel, footpaths, new pavement and replacing the retaining wall in front of the City Hall, power outlets for street parties and markets and a mosaic based on the history of Maryborough in the pavement in front of City Hall.

“The city has a fantastic history so there is plenty to inspire artists as they create the mosaic design,” Cr Sanderson said.

“All we need is an artist.”

Expressions of interest from artists to design and oversee the installation of the 1.5 metre diameter mosaic close on January 17.

Information on the mosaic project is available here

“Council is committed to revitalising the Maryborough CBD to ensure it is attractive to visitors and locals,” Cr Sanderson said.

The addition of power outlets would enhance the CBD’s ability to host events, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“The power outlets in Adelaide Street were improved during that stage of the revitalisation works,” he said.

“The addition of power outlets will enhance our ability to stage and host events, activate the CBD and attract people to the city centre.”

The majority of the revitalisation project, which is being carried out by SGQ Pty Ltd, and will be undertaken at night.

The roads will be closed and traffic detoured around the site at night; while during the day, traffic will be restricted to one-way (Eastern direction) through the project site. All on-street car parks in front of the works area will be closed.

“We thank residents and businesses for their patience while this important work in the Maryborough CBD is carried out,” Cr Sanderson said.

The Maryborough CBD Revitalisation Project was modelled on feedback from CBD businesses, property owners and residents during consultation held in 2013 for the Imagine This City Project.

Since then revitalisation works have been undertaken in Adelaide Street from Ellena to Sussex Streets; Kent Street from Adelaide Street towards March Street; Lennox Street from Sussex to Ellena Streets; Ellena Street from Adelaide to Bazaar Streets; and Bazaar Street from Ellena to Sussex Streets.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council is contributing almost $1.6 million towards the latest project, with the Queensland Government contributing $921,960 through the Building Our Regions program.
