The Fraser Coast Regional Council it's on target to reach is goal of spending 75% of its capital works budget locally.

In the July budget Council allocated $40.8 million for roads, bridges and drainage and $2.6 million for footpaths and bikeways as part of our efforts to ensure we have a safe, healthy and active community.

The contract for the $140,000 project to repave a section of Woodstock Street (from Lennox Street to Saltwater Creek Road) was awarded to Civil Mining and Construction (CMC).

CMC was also awarded the $133,000 to replace the pavement, kerb and channel in Cameron Court, Point Vernon.

A $1.1 million program to reconstruct Wedge Street and sections of Caddy Avenue in Hervey Bay was awarded to local company SGQ.

Local company Grand Civil was awarded $230,000 contract for Stage 3 of the Saltwater Creek Road footpath replacement (Sydney Street to St Helens School).

The project includes pavement widening, kerb and channel, installing pram ramps and a pedestrian refuge which will increase safety of students crossing the busy intersection as they head to and from school.

Council is responsible for about 2700 kilometres of roads and 330 kilometres of footpath throughout the region.

Council has also invested $130,000 in the region’s SES and disaster response network including $50,000 for a new shed for the Maryborough SES Group to house flood boats and $80,000 for a new vehicle and shed driveway at the Burrum Heads SES shed.

The all-weather access will allow heavy vehicles such as fire trucks to enter the compound and use the SES shed as a staging area during bushfire events.

The projects were brought forward so they could be undertaken while the COVID-19 restrictions were in place to support local business.

At the same time Council awarded a $1.8m contract to build Stage 4 of the Raward Road drainage channel to local company SGQ.

The project involves removing about 50,000 cubic metres of soil to enlarge the existing drainage channel from Doolong Road to the Hervey Bay Airport and build 6 metre-wide concrete channel, turf and grass seeding.

Last year (2019/20) Council’s Infrastructure Services team awarded more than $11 million in the road construction contracts. Of that 97% was awarded to local civil works contractors.

Over the past three financial years Council’s Top 10 Suppliers we all businesses within the region, and account for $124 million of Council’s budget.

Council is committed to a strong economy which includes a strong competitive market place.

Council makes every attempt to award contracts to the local marketplace and has offered a price advantage for local business in recognition of the increase in costs for regional companies, compared with metropolitan businesses; and the benefits to the local economy of locals gaining work.
